Internships are an exciting part of your college career. They can help you determine which career paths truly suits you. And they provide the hands-on, real-world experience and transferable skills that are critical to finding a job after you graduate.
Best of all, it’s within your power to ensure you have an amazing internship experience—no matter what you’re doing. To help guide you through the entire process, review this list of do’s and don’ts to make sure you fully benefit from all of your hard work.
1. a) Best Behaviour
Try to make a good impression so, you can come back in the future or even be kept on and employed. The potential of a job from your internship is quite high, so be on your best behavior.
b) Don’t be shy
You’re there to get sight into your field and of what you may be doing in the future. Ask to go to different departments, more work, or other things to do. The more you try, the more certain you’ll be about what you want to do in the future.
2. a) Be prepared
First impressions count so make the effort to dress appropriately and professionally for work to leave a positive impression on your employers or clients. During meetings, make sure you bring along a notebook to take down notes as it will sharpen your focus on the key points of the meeting that will help you with your given task.
b) Don’t be a pessimist
Embrace the feedback given to you by your supervisor or colleagues positively without taking things too personally. Learn from past mistakes, move on, and ensure that things will get done better the next time.
3. a) Be proactive
Be a team player and take a proactive approach. For example, if you have finished your tasks ahead of time, ask your teammates if there is anything else you can help with.
b) Don’t lose your temper
There is no place for ego or rage in the office. When caught in an unpleasant situation, take a step back, think calmly, and give yourself some time to reassess the issue.
4. a) Add value
Think about how you can add value to the team or projects that you are working on by offering teammates relevant suggestions or going the extra mile to help them accomplish their goals.
b) Don’t be stressed!
There is no perfect intern or employee in the workplace. When faced with any challenges, adopt a can-do attitude, and seek help from seniors and colleagues when required.
5. a) Apply for several internships
Do try to land multiple internships. If you do several internships, especially in different industries, you can refine your career goals. You will also overcome one of the biggest hurdles new grads face: not having enough work experience.
b) Don’t expect paid internships
In a perfect world, every employer would compensate their interns. But that’s not reality. Think of it this way. You are paying a lot of money (or taking out student loans) for your education. Your internship is the extension of this education that gives you real experience. It’s not just a “job.” It’s a chance to learn.
