Pets have a special place in our hearts and they know when you’re feeling blue or not well. . From distracting us when they see us sitting on the sofa in deep thought, to howling in the night to warn us, bringing their toy ropes or balls to play or simply pacing up and down to go for a walk – they have many ways by which they try to catch our attention. With the coronavirus pandemic affecting citizens all over the world, and keeping us indoors, our pets are showering us with love and making us feel less alone. Here are some to take care of them in these times –
Ensure adequate pet-care supply
You should have enough food supply, medicines, supplements, and other necessities needed to last the pet for at least 4 weeks. If you have tested positive for COVID-19 steer clear of pets and other humans in your household during this time. If you cannot find someone else to care for your pet, continue providing care yourself, but limit contact with them as much as possible. Try not to pet them but, if you have to, then wash your hands both before and after touching your pet.
Make an indoor or backyard potty
Having a stash of pee pads in the house may prove useful if you and your dog don’t want to go outdoors, in fear of catching something. Also, consider making a potty for your dog in the backyard by bordering off an area of the yard, so you can be quarantined together.
Do not overfeed
While people are forced to stay home and self-isolate, it is easier than ever to stress eat during this time without even realizing it — and overfeed pets as well. Overeating can cause obesity in them, which can lead to health problems.
Find indoor games to help pets exercise
It’s extremely important to engage pets physically and mentally while indoors. Call dogs back and forth through the house with treats, blow bubbles for them to chase, play hide, or purchase puzzle toys for them to get them to do sufficient exercise in the house.
Plan for medical emergencies
If you have tested positive for COVID-19 or suspect that you may be positive, and your pet becomes sick and requires the attention of a vet and no one else can take them to the animal hospital, pet owners should call ahead to inform the vet of the situation. It’s always a good idea to ensure every pet is up to date on his or her vaccines.
