Bitter cold temperatures and dry air that deplete the skin’s natural moisture. But the right ways can prevent you from having dry skin in winter. Use these 5 tips to avoid getting dry skin in winter.
Don’t take super-hot (or long) showers
Nothing sounds better than taking hot and long showers in winter, but you really shouldn’t. The higher temperatures dry out the skin by stripping away the natural oils, keeping the water lukewarm is much healthier. Try to take showers for no more than 10 minutes and avoid using bath sponges that can damage and irritate the skin.
Swap your soap
The most common causes of dry skin are harsh soaps, particularly those that promise lots of exfoliation. Soap strips away the moisture within your skin. Avoid deodorant or perfumed soap as that contains alcohol – instead, try soap-free cleansing products such as Cetaphil which contains added moisturizer.
Stay hydrated
Our body loses water through the skin all year round, especially when you spend most of the day in a warm indoor environment. This makes it easy to become dehydrated, which can contribute to dry skin. Drink regularly even if you don’t feel thirsty, and avoid coffee, which will dehydrate you even more.
Moisturize multiple times a day
It’s important to cover yourself in the moisturizer in the morning and before you snooze, starting with your face. Before you put on your pajamas, rub a hydrating body lotion all over from your neck down to your feet. It’ll soften your skin and keep moisture in as you sleep.
Avoid woolen clothing in the home
Woolen clothes can aggravate dry, sensitive skin, causing it to become itchy. If you are prone to dry skin, you may be better off sticking to softer, smoother fabrics that allow your skin to breathe, such as cotton.
